MILITARY AVIATION
▶ Helicopter cockpit display system for 'brownout' conditions.
Zero-zero visibility 'brownout / whiteout' vision, flight control, cockpit display system with mission / navigation management.
New thinking and new human factors focused technology enabling complete unhindered, unstressed, manual flight handling and total situational awareness for helicopters in zero-zero visibility conditions—including take-off, en-route, mission, approach and landing. Innovation developed specifically for military helicopters operating in desert and arctic conditions.

▶ Aircraft protection against laser attack—
Robust countermeasure against high energy asymmetric MANPAD laser / pulse energy weapon threat.
Designed to fully protect low flying aircraft's aircrew against asymmetric improvised energy weapon attacks in three scenarios: (1) Airliners on approach to city airports; (2) low level and ultra low level tactical air operations with platforms such as A400M; C130J; and Chinook; (3) Police and security forces helicopter operations.
This concept became the preferred choice of Dstl (electro optic sensors) for onward development.

Ultra low level (<50ft/15m) next generation night mission flight control and vision system replacing HUD / HMD / NVG—with integrated navigation, mission management, asymmetric defence and enhanced vision system (EVS).
Addresses all of the limitations and critical human factors, flight safety, and control issues in ultra low level (<50ft/15m) operations whilst fully blacked-out, at night, in poor weather, in mountainous hostile terrain—and eliminating any potential for CFIT or asymmetric attack. Designed for A400M, C130J and Chinook III/IV low-level and ultra low-level operations.
Radical new thinking with significant advances [and advantages] over HUD, HMD, and NVG: delivering a fused, 24 bit ultra high definition, full colour display interface—with fully integrated CFIT protection, asymmetric laser-attack protection, and intuitive flight control, mission management, and navigation suite.
A version has also been developed for strategic tanker aircraft operations to enable complete air-to-air refuelling situational awareness and mission management whilst blacked out, at night, and operating in comms silence.

Designed specifically for single-seat aircraft flying multi-role / mixed ground attack / air defence / self defence missions. Simplifies multiple and mixed target acquisition and engagements (using existing HOTAS switching and displays) — but delivering clear mission and combat advantage for the pilot.
This highly intuitive innovation presents targeting and engagement information in a radical new form—which moves the whole concept into the next generation, but which is totally compatible with existing hardware; which does not compromise existing practice; and does not require retraining. Specifically designed to enable quicker, more intuitive, more effective, multiple target combat management—whilst reducing pilot workload in single pilot aircraft.

A DEMONSTRATION IS AVAILABLE
▶ The elimination of catastrophic controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) and loss of control (LoC) accidents in global airline operations.
The outcome of twelve years intensive research investigation and design development which enables the complete elimination of the two major causes of loss-of-life in global passenger carrying aircraft—controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) and loss of control (LoC).
This research identifies and substantiates previously unrecognized causes, causal issues, and factors in CFIT and LoC in commercial aircraft operations—which are significantly different to the causal issues often proposed. This new direction of investigation enables radical new thinking in human factors and human / machine interface paradigms together with radical and highly original cockpit / pilot interface designs which address ALL of the causal issues.
[This research identifies that a specific 'point' of pilot error exists; that previously unidentified root causes have been identified—and paradigms for elimination defined.]
Elements of this research have been presented at various events under the title: 'Why do airliners fly into mountains and how do we stop them?'
Core innovations coming from this program :
a. Novel human / machine interface paradigms; and novel, highly intuitive next generation flight management and flight control system paradigms.
b. Highly intuitive, radically innovative flight and navigation displays (PPVCNB / VIVID) [proven in tests to be significantly superior to current systems].

▶ The autonomous satellite download of cockpit black box data [aviation safety / accident investigation].
First proposed in 2004, paradigms and technologies for the autonomous satellite downlink of airliner cockpit voice recorder and (black box) flight data recorders—pre-CFIT or LoC terminal events.
Relinquishing costly and often dangerous searches to recover the 'black box' from inhospitable terrain or the depths of an ocean in the event of an aircraft loss. The satellite download is triggered by a series of pre-defined events and exceedences of normal allowable pilot error.
The overriding objective of the technology [presented and published at the RAeS / CEAS Aerospace Innovations Conference, Manchester, 2009] is to arrest the accident trajectory prior to it developing into an irrecoverable controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) or loss of control (LoC) event—the download only being initiated when all rectification attempts have failed.
A DEMONSTRATION IS AVAILABLE
This radical new thinking in vehicle design and deployment of super-massive, ultra-long-range, ultra-long endurance UAVs—is in scenarios where being unmanned is a distinct mission advantage. These game-changing innovations introduce a whole suite of new technologies in wing-forms, flight dynamics, flight control, and air-to-air unmanned autonomous refuelling—enabling rapid transit to mission, with on-station loiter and hover—and flight times, if needed, extending into weeks or months.
This work, some of which was originally presented at the RAeS Structural Design Conference, Delft University, Netherlands, and UAS2014 conference, Twickenham, includes—innovative UAV technologies; radical new forms of vehicle structure and technologies; lift enhancing innovations and new material forms.
